Portfolio — Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center
The Lower Cape Fear Hospice Administrative Facility houses the administrative offices for the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center. To adhere to the architect’s vision, Fluhrer Reed’s engineers designed sloping steel columns to give the building a sway-type effect. The large, steel roof overhangs of the building had to be designed to withstand the sizeable uplift forces created by the high wind loads present in the eastern portion of North Carolina. The orientation of the building and its location on the project site required a partial portion of the building to be below grade. In some areas of the building, retaining walls taller than 15 feet had to be designed. The building complies with the strict LEED certification requirements set forth by the United States Green Building Council.
